Before you order the cartridge
CLI-481 is a genuine Canon ink cartridge, sold as 4 separate colours (Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow), and fits PIXMA TS704a.
PIXMA cartridges come in two very different forms: one that carries ink and the print head together (PG/CL), and one that is ink only with the head fixed in the printer (PGI/CLI). That difference changes everything.
PG/CL vs PGI/CLI
PG and CL cartridges contain the print head — every replacement is a fresh head, which fixes quality problems on its own but raises the cartridge price. PGI and CLI cartridges are ink only with the head fixed in the printer, so they cost less and are sold per colour, but a clogged head needs cleaning or service.
Pigment black is not the same as black
Models that take five tanks (PGI-450 + CLI-451) carry two blacks: a pigment black (PGBK) for text so it prints sharp and does not bleed, and a dye black (BK) used in photo output. They are not interchangeable — each has its own slot and role.
XL and XXL
The same cartridge with more ink and the same fit. Cost per page falls as capacity rises, so if you print regularly the difference pays back within a couple of months. Yield is measured under ISO/IEC 24711 — a standard suite of test pages, not a coverage percentage.
Genuine vs compatible and refilled
The difference is not only price. A genuine item is guaranteed not to leak inside the machine, and a leak reaches the print head or the fuser — which costs many times the price gap. On top of that, a fault caused by a counterfeit consumable voids the warranty; that is written in the device's own warranty certificate, not a condition we add.
Before you open the cartridge
- Do not unwrap it until you are ready to install — the head dries if left exposed
- Do not touch the copper chip or the head nozzles with your fingers
- An opened cartridge is not returnable, so confirm the number before breaking the seal
- Faint printing right after installation usually needs a head clean from the device menu, not another cartridge
