Before you order ink
GI-490 is a genuine Canon ink bottle, sold as 4 separate colours (Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow), and fits PIXMA G1411, PIXMA G2411 and PIXMA G4411.
Tank devices (MegaTank and MAXIFY GX) do not take cartridges — they are refilled from bottles. That is what drops the cost per page to pennies, and it makes the right number more important: the ink goes straight into the tank and there is no undoing it.
Each series takes a different bottle
The numbers sit close together and mistakes are easy: GI-490 for the G1411/G2411/G4411 series, GI-41 for G1420/G2420/G3430, GI-40 for G5040/G6040, GI-43 for G540/G640, GI-46 for MAXIFY GX. Similar names, entirely different machines — check the compatible-devices list above before ordering.
Bottles are sold per colour
Each colour is a separate bottle, and you replace only the one that ran out — not the whole set. Black empties fastest in office printing, and the photo models (G540/G640) carry six colours, adding red and grey to the usual four.
How yield is measured
Inkjet ink is measured under ISO/IEC 24711, which is not a coverage percentage like toner — it is a standard suite of test pages printed until the ink runs out. Comparing a bottle's page figure with a toner cartridge's is therefore comparing two different standards.
Genuine vs compatible and refilled
The difference is not only price. A genuine item is guaranteed not to leak inside the machine, and a leak reaches the print head or the fuser — which costs many times the price gap. On top of that, a fault caused by a counterfeit consumable voids the warranty; that is written in the device's own warranty certificate, not a condition we add.
Refilling notes
- The genuine bottle has a nozzle that stops on its own when the tank is full — no squeezing, no guessing
- Each tank inlet is shaped to accept one colour only, so cross-filling is hard to do by accident
- Do not leave the device empty for long — the print head dries and cleaning consumes ink
- Print at least one page a week if the device is used infrequently
