The drum is not the toner
C-EXV 42 Drum Unit is a genuine Canon drum unit, and fits imageRUNNER 2224N, imageRUNNER 2224 and imageRUNNER 2425.
These are two separate parts with different lifespans. Toner is the powder that prints; the drum is the cylinder that transfers it to the paper — and it lasts far longer, so it is not replaced every time.
When the drum is replaced
The device tells you. Before the message appears you will see repeating marks in the same spot on the page — a dot or line recurring at a fixed interval. That is how a drum fault differs from a toner fault: toner problems are random or faded, drum problems repeat at a regular pitch.
Replacing it is not a service call
The drum is a user-replaceable consumable like toner, not a spare part needing a technician. Just do not touch the green cylinder surface and do not leave it in light — either ruins it immediately.
Genuine vs compatible and refilled
The difference is not only price. A genuine item is guaranteed not to leak inside the machine, and a leak reaches the print head or the fuser — which costs many times the price gap. On top of that, a fault caused by a counterfeit consumable voids the warranty; that is written in the device's own warranty certificate, not a condition we add.
Signs the drum is wearing out
- A dot or line repeating at the same interval on every page
- A faint grey background across the whole page
- Quality does not improve after a toner change
